Varsity Game Recap:

Yorktown won their semi-final district championship game against Washington-Lee, by a score of 9-0, in a game played at Yorktown on Friday, May 21.  Yorktown will advance to the National District Championship game, and will face Hayfield (who defeated Mount Vernon by a score of 10-2 in their district semi-final game) on Tuesday, May 25, at Hayfield.

Yorktown starting pitcher Kate Bauman pitched a 7 inning, five hit shutout, striking out five and walking four W-L batters.  Washington-Lee pitcher Lillian Prins, who shutout Yorktown in their last meeting, took the loss in this game, pitching 4.6 innings, and giving up nine hits, all nine runs, striking out three and walking five.  Kyra Klontz pitched 1.3 innings in relief, facing four batters, and allowing no hits - only two pop-ups and two fly balls to the outfield.

Yorktown made the most of their nine hits, with Charlotte Batdorf hitting a triple and a double, batting in two runs.  Vivian Angrisani had three RBI with a double and a single.  Sarah Spaeth (2 RBI), Kelly John (1 RBI), Kimmi Oldham, Lindsay Irving, and Rachel Leonard all contributed timely singles.

Defensively, Kelly John made a spectacular play on a line drive that was headed for centerfield, but Kelly made a one-hop catch behind the second base bag and fired a throw to first to deny the batter.  Kelly also had a double play on a sharp, low line drive to get the batter, and then doubling up a runner at third.  Yorktown also caught Jenny Peel trying to steal home.  Catcher Kimmi Oldham fired a throw to third when Jenny tried to get back to the bag, but the ball skipped away from Lindsay Irving into short left field.  Jenny then broke for home, but left-fielder Kelsey Patterson quickly fielded the ball and threw a perfect strike to Kimmi at home plate, who tagged the runner out as she was coming in to score.  Washington-Lee left fielder Imani Bigsby made two nice catches of long fly balls by Laurie Pinkerton and Kelly John.

Varsity Game Recap:

In the first round of the National District Tournament, Yorktown defeated Wakefield 17-1, in a game played at Yorktown on May 18.  Starting pitcher Kate Bauman went four innings for the win, allowing three hits, with six strikeouts.  Laurie Pinkerton pitched the last inning, allowing no hits, with one strikeout.

Yorktown had 16 hits, led by Kelly John, with a single, a double and a triple.  Charlotte Batdorf and Lindsay Irving each had two hits, both doubles.  Rachel Leonard had two hits, including one double.  Izzy Linzer also had two hits.  Five players had one hit each:  Kimmi Oldham, Caroline Del Giudice, Sarah Spaeth, Sammi Dowdell, and Katie Kaufman.

The best defensive play for Wakefield was by shortstop Brittany Prosise.  With runners on first and second, she fielded a ground ball by Kiersten Rolla, tagged out the runner coming from second, and fired to first in time to double up the batter.  Perhaps Yorktown's best defensive play was by catcher Kimmi Oldham and shortstop Kelly John.  With a runner on first, Kimmi blocked a pitch in the dirt, and kept it in front of her.  When the runner saw the ball on the ground, she broke for second.  Kimmi fired a perfect throw to Kelly, who caught the ball just as the runner slid into her glove.

Varsity Game Recap:

Yorktown came from behind for a decisive victory over Hayfield by a score of 5-1, in a game played at Yorktown on May 7.  Yorktown pitcher Kate Bauman pitched a seven inning complete game, giving up five hits, with nine strikeouts and allowing only one run (unearned).  Hayfield pitcher Amber Fowler also pitched a complete game, and took the loss.  She gave up eight hits and five runs, but only one earned run, with six strikeouts.

The scoring started in the Hayfield third inning.  With two outs, right fielder Hannah Williams singled up the middle.  Catcher Sam Perry-Shifflet walked, and pitcher Amber Fowler hit a ground ball to shortstop Kelly John.  She was called out by the field umpire, but with Yorktown already headed for the dugout, Hayfield appealed the call, and the umpires conferred.  Eventually, the home plate umpire reversed the call, ruling that the throw had pulled first baseman Charlotte Batdorf off the bag, so Yorktown returned to the field with the bases loaded.  The next batter, shortstop  Megan Perry-Shifflet, smashed a hit up the middle that ricocheted off the foot of pitcher Kate Bauman.  The ball stayed in the infield because of the deflection, but a run scored.  The run was officially unearned because it would not have scored without the error.

In the Yorktown fourth inning, Charlotte Batdorf led off with a pop-up to shortstop Megan Perry-Shifflet that was dropped, for what turned out to be a critical defensive error.  Charlotte stole second, and then third, still with no outs.  The next batter struck out, but the following batter, Laurie Pinkerton, lined a single to center, for her second hit of the game, to score Charlotte and tie the game.  DP Sarah Spaeth reached base on a fielder's choice, with Laurie being forced out at second.  Kiersten Rolla came in to run for Sarah, and moved up to second when third baseman Lindsay Irving walked.  Both runners advanced a base on a passed ball by catcher Sam Perry-Shifflet.  Shortstop Kelly John drove in Kiersten with the go-ahead run on a single up the middle.  Rachel Leonard, batting for right fielder Sammi Dowdell, flied out to center to end the inning.

In the fifth inning, Yorktown added an insurance run, when catcher Kimmi Oldham led off with a single up the middle, and took second base on a sacrifice bunt by center fielder Katie Roberts.  Charlotte Batdorf then doubled off the wall in left centerfield, to score Kimmi.

In the Yorktown sixth inning, Sammi Dowdell beat out an infield slap with two outs.  Kimmi Oldham followed with a single to right, for her second hit, with Sammi going to second.  Katie Roberts hit a routine ground ball to second, but second baseman Taryn McElhenny dropped the ball, for another critical error, which loaded the bases.  Charlotte Batdorf came up big with her second hit, a single to right.  Sammi scored easily from third and Kimmi rounded third and headed for home.  Catcher Sam Perry-Shifflet appeared to have the plate blocked, and the throw from right fielder Hannah Williams appeared to be in time, but Kimmi managed to slide by the catcher and get her hand on the plate before the tag could be applied.  The play left Charlotte with three RBI for the game.

Yorktown lost to Loudoun Valley 6-0, in a game played at Yorktown on May 5.  The Patriots managed only one hit off Loudoun Valley pitcher Kelsey Richardson, who finished with eight strikeouts, for the win.  The one hit was by Katie Roberts, who beat out a slow grounder to the right side of the infield.  Loudoun Valley hammered out a total of 12 hits, including four doubles and a triple.  Of these, ten came off Yorktown starter Kelsey Patterson, who gave up all of the Loudoun Valley runs in 4-2/3 innings, with three strikeouts, and took the loss.  Laurie Pinkerton pitched 2-1/3 innings to finish up, and allowed two more hits, but no runs, with three strikeouts.

Yorktown made several good defensive plays.  In the third inning, with a runner on second and no outs, Loudoun catcher Karly Johnson hit a drive deep into the gap in right center, but center fielder Katie Roberts came over to make a fine running catch to take away another extra-base hit, and she then threw to second in time to double up the runner.  In the fifth inning, shortstop Kelly John made a running catch of a line drive that appeared to be heading for left field, to take away another hit.  In the sixth inning, with a runner on third and one out, the Loudoun batter hit a fly ball down the left field foul line that left fielder Sammi Dowdell caught in foul territory, but it appeared to be deep enough to score the runner, who tagged up and headed for the plate.  Sammi made a strong throw to catcher Kimmi Oldham, who applied the tag to keep the run from scoring.

Yorktown lost to O'Connell by a score of 7-3, in a game played at Yorktown on May 1. O'Connell's Jilly Falle pitched a complete game, allowing four hits, with 13 strikeouts, for the win.  Yorktown starter Kate Bauman allowed six hits and seven walks in 4-2/3 innings, with two strikeouts, and all seven O'Connell runs scored.  Kelsey Patterson pitched the last 2-1/3 innings, allowing only one hit, with one walk, one strikeout, and no runs scored.

For O'Connell, the offensive leader was third baseman Jesse Burke, who had a 2-run bases loaded single in the second inning to start the scoring, and a 2-run home run in the fifth, to conclude the O'Connell scoring.  She also had a bases loaded walk, for a total of 5 RBI.

Although trailing badly in the late innings, Yorktown kept trying to fight back.  In the sixth inning, Katie Roberts led off with a hard earned walk, after fouling off the 3-2 pitch three times.  The next batter, Kelsey Patterson, hit a slow roller to second, which she beat out.  On the throw to first, Katie rounded second without hesitation and headed for third.  She beat the throw back across the diamond, to give Yorktown runners at first and third with no outs.  With Sarah Spaeth batting for Sammi Dowdell, Kelsey stole second, and Katie scored the first Yorktown run on the throw to second.  Then Sarah grounded a single up the middle to also score Kelsey.  Then Sammi re-entered the game to run for Sarah, and stole second.  Charlotte Batdorf, who also had the first Yorktown hit earlier, hit a line drive to right field, which was the hardest hit ball of the game for Yorktown, but the right fielder made the catch for the first out.  Kimmi Oldham then lined a single past the diving second baseman into right center, with Sammi stopping at third.  Kimmi then stole second, and when the catcher's throw sent into centerfield, Sammi scored and Kimmi took third.  The inning ended when the next two batters struck out and grounded out, respectively.

Although O'Connell had seven hits officially, many of their outs were also recorded as hard hit balls.  Yorktown made several fine defensive plays to help keep the game as close as it was.  At third base, Lindsay Irving made two sparkling plays on ground balls that appeared to be headed for left field.  Vivian Angrisani, at second, and pitcher Kate Bauman both speared wicked line drives.  Katie Roberts made a couple of nice running catches in the gap in right centerfield.  Sammi Dowdell made a diving catch of a fly ball that looked like it was going to drop into shallow right centerfield, to end the fourth inning.  In the sixth inning, with one out and runners at first and second, the batter hit a similar-looking fly ball to shallow right center.  Sammi charged the ball again, and because she had made the earlier play, the runners hesitated.  The ball actually dropped in, and Sammi was able to throw to shortstop Kelly John at second in time to force out the runner coming from first.  Kelly also made an excellent play earlier in the game on a hard-hit ball and made a strong throw to first for an out.

Yorktown defeated Wakefield 23-0 in a game played at Wakefield on April 30.  Laurie Pinkerton pitched a complete game for the win, allowing three hits, no walks, and with nine strikeouts.  Yorktown had 11 hits, led by Charlotte Batdorf, who had four hits and a walk in five plate appearances, along with six RBI.  Laurie Pinkerton had two hits, while Kimmi Oldham, Vivian Angrisani, Kelly John, Kiersten Rolla, and Sammi Dowdell had one hit each.

Perhaps the best defensive play of the game was by Wakefield left fielder Krystal Shackleford, who made a leaping catch on a drive into left centerfield by Kelly John.  For Yorktown, Rachel Leonard made a nice running catch of a ball hit into the gap in right center, and Kelly John made a nice play in the second inning on a ground ball that appeared to be headed for centerfield, and made a strong throw to get the runner at first.

Yorktown defeated Mount Vernon 2-0, in a well-pitched game at Yorktown on April 27.  Kate Bauman pitched a complete game for the win, allowing only three hits, with 13 strikeouts.  Mount Vernon pitcher Olivia Compton was almost as effective, allowing four hits and striking out 11.

The first Yorktown run scored in the third inning when Charlotte Batdorf singled to left center with two out, for her second hit of the game.  She stole second, and scored on Vivian Angrisani's single.  The other Yorktown run came in the fifth inning when Kelly John walked.  Then she stole second, but the catcher's throw went into center field, and got past the center fielder, so Kelly came all the way around to score.  The other Yorktown hit was a single by Kimmi Oldham, who also had a walk and three stolen bases, to reach third base twice.  But she was stranded at third each time, because the next batter struck out.

Varsity Game Recap:

In a game played at Edison on April 23, Yorktown scored 12 runs in the last inning to break open what had been a close game, eventually winning by a score of 16-1.  Kelsey Patterson was the starting pitcher for Yorktown and went six innings for the win.  She scattered nine hits, but gave up only one run.  She also recorded nine strikeouts.  Charlotte Batdorf pitched the seventh inning for the save, allowing one hit, with one strikeout.

Edison began the scoring with a run in the third inning.  Shortstop Rachel Clausen led off with her second single of the game.  She went to second on a sacrifice bunt, and to third when Edison pitcher Shauna Erickson beat out a slow roller to the right side of the field.   The courtesy runner for the pitcher then tried to steal, but Yorktown catcher Kimmi Oldham made a strong throw to get her out at second, for the second out.  However, the runner from third scored on the play.  This turned out to be an important defensive play for Yorktown because Edison had runners on first and third, but with two outs, in each of the next three innings.  None of the runners at first made another attempt to steal second, even though they represented the tying run in two cases.

Yorktown took the lead with three runs in the top of the fourth. Charlotte Batdorf led off with a line drive single to left.  Then Vivian Angrisani hit a drive over the fence, just inside the left field foul pole, for a two-run home run.  Then Kimmi Oldham lined a single to left center, and came all the way around to score when Lindsay Irving doubled to right center.  Yorktown added an insurance run in the sixth inning when Kimmi Oldham led off with a single to center, and stole second.  Two outs later, she scored when Kelsey Patterson singled to left.

In the Yorktown seventh, Laurie Pinkerton led off with a double to left center.  She stopped at third when Kelly John grounded a single to left, but Kelly took second on the throw to the plate.  Charlotte Batdorf was out at first on a hard ground ball to short, but Laurie scored, and Kelly took third.  Then Vivian Angrisani hit a blast to deep left center that hit the railing on top of the fence, before bouncing into the trees for her second two-run home run of the game.  Then Kimmi Oldham walked, stole second, and took third when the catcher's throw went into centerfield.  She scored when Lindsay Irving singled to center.  Lindsay took second on a wild pitch, and scored when Katie Roberts singled to left center.  At that point, the wheels came off completely for Edison.  They changed pitchers, but the new pitcher faced ten batters, and only retired one.  However, the defense behind her committed two errors, both in plays the could have ended the inning much sooner.  In all, Yorktown finished with 14 hits.  Besides those already mentioned, Charlotte Batdorf had two more (total of three), and Laurie Pinkerton had one more (total of two).

Yorktown had two standout defensive plays, one each by Izzy Linzer and Charlotte Batdorf.  In the first inning, with a runner in scoring position, Charlotte made a diving catch of an infield bloop to end the inning.  In the Edison seventh, after a lead-off walk, Izzy speared a line drive that was headed for center field, and then threw to first to double up the runner.

But in the top of the seventh inning, Yorktown broke through with four hits and three runs.  With one out, Vivian Angrisani beat out a ground ball to deep short.  Laurie Pinkerton followed with a line drive single to left, for her second hit of the game.  Izzy Linzer, running for Vivian, was out trying to steal third, for the second out, with Laurie taking second.  Then Kimmi Oldham tripled into the right field corner to drive in the first run of the game.  Lindsay Irving then walked and stole second.  Sarah Spaeth followed with a two-run single to left.  Fairfax scored its run in the bottom of the seventh on a walk, a hit batter, and two Yorktown errors.  Sammi Dowdell was a defensive standout for Yorktown again, with three nice running catches in right field.
