Varsity Game Recap:

Yorktown narrowly lost a close contest First Round Regional game against West Potomac, 3-2, in a game played at Yorktown on May 22nd.  Yorktown got on the scoreboard first in the bottom of the second inning.  Annie Blaine led off with a double to the wall in right centerfield, and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Stephanie Severn.  Gretchen Schneider followed with a single to left field, to drive in Annie with Yorktown's first run.

In the third inning, West Potomac scored all three of their runs in the game.  Maggie Berrigan led off the inning with a double to left field.  Sam Bauer walked with one out.  Both runners moved up on an infield error with Sara Link up at bat, leaving the bases loaded with still only one out.  The next batter struck out, and with two outs, it looked like Yorktown might get out of the inning with no damage.  However, Jasmine Picini lobbed a fly ball that fell in between the second baseman and right fielder, and with all three runners going on two outs, three runs scored on the hit.  Yorktown answered with one more run in the bottom of the third.  Hannah Bauman stroked a double to right centerfield and took third on Kristen Soroka's infield hit.  Kristen stole second with Emily Panyard at bat.  Hannah scored on Emily's sacrifice fly to centerfield.  Kristen tried to make it to third, but she was tagged out on a throw from the centerfielder to the third baseman to end the inning.  The score remained 3-2 for the rest of the game.

West Potomac's pitcher Morgan Maniglia got the win with a seven inning complete game, allowing five hits and two earned runs, and with six strikeouts.  Hannah Bauman took the loss for Yorktown, pitching for six innings, and giving up four hits and three unearned runs, with seven strikeouts.  Annie Blaine pitched the seventh inning, with no hits, two walks and two strikeouts.

The loss was especially sad for Yorktown, who will be losing ten seniors to graduation.  This group of talented players have provided the fans with many joys over the years, and are a spectacular group of young women on and off the field.  They have been the heart and soul of this team for many years, and will be sorely missed.

Congratulations to all of you and good luck in your futures!

Yorktown won the National District Championship Tournament in dramatic fashion, 4-3, over Edison in extra innings.  The game was played at Yorktown on May 18th.  Edison scored first, in the top of the first inning, when shortstop Rachel Clasen walked, and went to second on a single by Britney Weber.  Alexa Miller also singled, and Clasen scored when the centerfielder bobbled the ball.  Yorktown evened the score in their half of the first, when Emily Panyard singled with two outs.  Katie Roberts ran for Emily, and scored on Annie Blaine's single.  But Edison regained the lead in the second inning.  Kaitlynn Miller reached on an error with two outs, and then scored on Lisa Kindred's triple.

The score remained 2-1 until the Yorktown sixth inning, when Kelly John reached second on a throwing error with two outs.  Laurie Pinkerton doubled over the third baseman's head, down the left field line, to score Kelly with the tying run. Katie Roberts went in to run for Laurie, and scored when Kimmi Oldham lined the ball into the gap in left centerfield, and the ball rolled to the wall for a triple, giving Yorktown its first lead of the game.

Hannah Bauman was the starting pitcher for Yorktown, and went the first three innings, giving up two runs on four hits, with three strikeouts.  She was replaced as pitcher by Annie Blaine in the fourth inning, who held Edison to no runs, no hits and four strikeouts through the sixth inning.  But in the top of the seventh, with their backs against the wall, Edison refused to give up.  With one out, Rachel Clasen reached base on a dropped third strike.  She took second on a passed ball, and scored when Britney Weber singled to center, tying the game again.  Yorktown failed to score in its half of the seventh, so the game went to extra innings.

In the eighth, Annie Blaine retired Edison, three up and three down.  In the bottom of the eighth, Kelly John drew a two-out walk, and then stole second.  Laurie Pinkerton was hit by a pitch, bringing up Kimmi Oldham.  With the outfield playing deep because of a triple in her previous at-bat, Kimmi hit a fly ball to shallow centerfield that dropped in, scoring Kelly with the winning run.

Annie Blaine was the winning pitcher, going five innings, giving up one hit and one unearned run, with seven strikeouts.

Yorktown was aided by two sparkling defensive plays, both of which took hits away from Edison catcher Alexa Miller.  In the third inning, she lined a ball into right center that dropped in for what appeared to be a single, but right fielder Kimmi Oldham grabbed it and fired to first, and with the help of first baseman Annie Blaine's fine stretch, turned the apparent hit into a force-out at first. In the fifth inning, Alexa smashed the ball toward left field, but Yorktown third baseman Lindsay Irving made a nice catch to take away another hit.  Miller, herself, made perhaps the best defensive play for Edison, with a diving catch of a foul pop-up to end the Yorktown first inning, leaving the bases loaded.

Yorktown won its National District Tournament Semi-Final game against Washington-Lee, 5-1, in a well-played game at Yorktown on May 15th.  W-L  scored first, in the top of the first inning, when Amanda Enright led off with a double.  She advanced to third on a ground ball, and scored on a two-out error.  Yorktown evened the score in its half of the first when Emily Panyard doubled with two outs, and scored on Annie Blaine's single.  Stephanie Severn also had a hit in the inning, but there was no further scoring at that point.  In the Yorktown second, Kelly John had the biggest hit of the game, blasting a home run over the centerfield fence to give Yorktown the lead, which it never relinquished.  Later in the inning, Hannah Bauman tripled to the fence in right center.  Kelsey Patterson, running for Hannah, scored on Kristen Soroka's double.  Emily Panyard also had a single in the inning, but the inning ended with the score 3-1.  Yorktown added another run in the fourth inning, when Kelly John led off with a double, her second extra-base hit of the game.  She went to third on Katie Robert's sacrifice bunt, and scored on Hannah Bauman's ground ball.  In the fifth inning, Yorktown completed the scoring when Emily Panyard led off with a double to right center, her third hit of the game, and her second double.  Lindsay Irving went in to run for Emily, then went to third on a ground out, and scored on Gretchen Schneider's single.  In all, Yorktown had ten hits, six for extra bases.

Hannah Bauman was the starting and winning pitcher, with a seven-inning complete game.  She gave up five hits, and one unearned run, with nine strikeouts.

The defensive play of the game was by Yorktown first baseman Annie Blaine, who made a leaping catch of a scorching line drive in the fifth inning.

Yorktown lost a closely contested game to O'Connell, 1-0, in a game played at Yorktown on May 2nd.  The only run of the game came in the fifth inning, by O'Connell centerfielder Allison Grasmeder, who reached base on an error, and then stole second.  The second baseman, Sarah Eidt, hit a ball sharply in the air to shallow right field.  Yorktown right fielder Kimmi Oldham charged the ball and tried to make a sliding shoestring catch, but only succeeded in trapping the ball.  Grasmeder, running hard with two outs, beat the throw to the plate.

Hannah Bauman pitched a complete game for Yorktown, and took the loss.  She gave up five hits, and no earned runs, with three strikeouts.  Yorktown had only three hits in the game, one each by Kristen Soroka, Emily Panyard, and Gretchen Schneider.  Two double plays initiated by Kelly John helped Yorktown keep the game close.  In the first inning, with a runner on first and O'Connell trying to hit-and-run, she caught a blooper in short right field, and then threw to Annie Blaine at first to double up the runner.  In the seventh inning, with a runner on first attempting to steal second, Kelly broke to the bag to take the throw, but the batter hit a line drive right to her for the first out.  She then tagged the runner to complete an unassisted double play.

Yorktown clinched its third consecutive National District regular season championship with a 7-0 victory over Falls Church on May 1st.  The game was also a celebration of Senior Night at Yorktown, with pre-game ceremonies honoring its ten graduating seniors for their softball careers.  The seniors being celebrated are:  Hannah Bauman, Annie Blaine, Caroline Clements, Kelly McCoy, Olivia Merrion, Emily Panyard, Shelby Rolla, Gretchen Schneider, Stephanie Severn and Kristen Soroka.

In the game itself, Olivia Merrion was the starting and winning pitcher, with a seven inning complete game.  She gave up only two hits, with eight strikeouts.  Yorktown got on the scoreboard in the third inning with three runs.  Kimmi Oldham led off with a single to left, but took second when the ball got past the left fielder.  After Hannah Bauman flied to center, Kristen Soroka grounded to shortstop, but reached base when the shortstop fumbled the ball, with Kimmi taking third.  On the first pitch to Stephanie Severn, Kristen took second.  Then Stephanie hit a strong line drive down the rightfield line that dropped and then spun away from the right fielder, into the corner.  Before the defense could get the ball back to the infield, Stephanie had circled the bases for an inside-the-park home run, with Kimmi and Kristen scoring ahead of her.

The rest of the scoring came in the Yorktown sixth inning when Shelby Rolla, playing her first game in two years, led off with a line drive single to center.  Then Kimmi Oldham grounded to the shortstop, but both runners were safe when the shortstop dropped the ball.  Then Hannah Bauman grounded back to the pitcher, who threw to third, forcing Shelby, with the other runners safe.  Kelly John entered the game to run for Hannah.  Kristen Soroka then hit a soft line drive off the end of the bat that was  headed for left field.  The third baseman knocked the ball down, but was unable to make a play on it.  Kimmi rounded third base at full speed and scored all the way from second on a ball that was hit about sixty feet.  Kelly stopped at second and Kristen was safe at first.  Kelly stole third and Kristen eventually took second with no throw.  Stephanie Severn walked to load the bases, and Katie Roberts walked to force in Kelly with another run.  Gretchen Schneider grounded to the second baseman, who stepped on the bag to force out Katie, but Kelly scored on the play.  The next batter, Olivia Merrion, lined a single to left center to drive in Stephanie, and completed the scoring.

Yorktown rallied in the late innings to win a closely contested game against Fairfax.  Fairfax put together three hits to score two runs in the third inning, and led 2-0 going into the fifth inning.  With two outs in the fifth inning, Katie Roberts beat out a bunt for a hit, and Kimmi Oldham drew a walk.  Gretchen Schneider singled to right, driving in Katie, and putting Yorktown on the scoreboard.

In the sixth inning, again with two outs, Hannah Bauman walked, and was replaced by a pinch runner, Sammi Dowdell.  Sammi took second on a wild pitch, and scored when Laurie Pinkerton singled to center, tying the game.  Laurie's ground ball got past the center fielder for an error, and she went all the way to third.  The next batter struck out to end the inning.

In the seventh inning, Yorktown scored three times to put the game away.  Katie Roberts led off with a ground ball to second, but was safe when the first baseman dropped the ball on the throw.  With the third baseman coming in, expecting a bunt, Kimmi Oldham smashed a hit into left field for a single, advancing Katie to second.  Both runners moved up on a wild pitch.  With one out, Emily Panyard hit a hard ground ball to third, but Katie beat the throw to the plate, putting Yorktown ahead.  Kimmi took third on the play, and Kelsey Patterson went in to run for Emily, and took second on the first pitch.  Annie Blaine singled to left, over the shortstop's head, to score Kimmi, with Kelsey stopping at third.  Annie took second on the throw to the plate.  Stephanie Severn grounded back to the pitcher for the second out, but Kelsey scored on the play, with Caroline Clements (running for Annie) taking third.  With Kelly McCoy batting for Hannah Bauman, Caroline was called out at the plate trying to score on a wild pitch, to end the inning.

In all, Yorktown had five runs on seven hits, with no errors.  Emily Panyard and Hannah Bauman also had hits.  The winning pitcher was Hannah Bauman, with a complete game.  She gave up both runs on seven hits, with six strike outs.  The defensive play of the game was by Katie Roberts, who made a sparkling catch of a foul ball in the first inning.  After a long run, she stabbed the ball before it hit the ground, narrowly avoiding crashing into the fence down the left field line.
